As we launch our Autumn 2024 Forgotten Orchard tour, we’re thrilled to take you behind the scenes to explore the inspiration behind the production and introduce the talented team bringing it to life. In this blog series, we’re shining the spotlight on the incredible individuals making it all happen, this time with a special focus on co-devisor and actor, Caroline Mathison.
Question 1: Tell us about your role as co-devisor and performer in The Forgotten Orchard production and what you like about it?
I have been involved in The Forgotten Orchard since its first stages of development, as co-devisor and performer. It’s amazing to think back to the early days of exploring ideas, stories and characters and to see how those ideas found their way into the final show in various forms (I particularly remember improvising characters inspired by the names of apple varieties like Lord Rosebery and Lemon Queen!) But the most amazing part of the journey is putting the show in front of young audiences and seeing their reactions: the excitement, the laughter, the curiosity, and the quiet moments of understanding.
Question 2: If you could plant any tree in an orchard, which type would it be and why?
If I could plant any tree in an orchard, it would be a Tickled Pink apple tree, partly because the name makes me smile. But also because it is good both as an eater and as a cooker, and has distinctive pink flesh as the name suggests. Who wouldn’t want a pink apple pie or some lovely pink apple juice?! And if that wasn’t enough, in spring, the tree is covered in beautiful deep pink blossom.
Question 3: What’s your favourite moment in the show, and why do you think it resonates with the audience?
My very favourite moment in the show is when Katy and Grandad enjoy a Clydeside apple together, the first fruits of their harvest labour. It’s a wonderful moment of connection between the characters, but also with the audience, and you can literally hear the “mmm”s as everyone imagines a delicious bite of juicy apple!
