We are very excited to announce that we will be going ahead with our summer production Uprooted featuring a living, breathing edible theatre set! The first Scottish grown Living Stage.
A collaboration with Australian Stage Designer Tanja Beer, Uprooted is new theatre production for children and families, fusing performance, music and living plants with innovative stage design.
The production features a Living Stage; a recyclable, biodegradable and edible set created from locally found, reclaimed materials. Part theatre show, part garden and part art installation, audiences will get the chance to interact by nibbling on plants, smelling herbs, and sampling drinks.
After over a year of planning, we are very excited to be co-creating a theatre production and Living Stage with Tanja and cannot wait to tour Uprooted to schools, festivals and communities across Scotland this summer. Peas, mint, tomatoes, courgettes and so much more have already been planted at 4 Glasgow Primary Schools as part of our Out to Play project, and we cannot wait to see the stage ‘grow’ over the coming months.
Laura MacKenzie-Stuart, Portfolio Manager – Theatre and International at Creative Scotland, said: “We are delighted to support Whirlybird Theatre Company’s ‘Uprooted’. The ‘Living Stage’ of this innovative outdoor production has been designed by acclaimed set designer and eco scenographer, Tanja Beer. Through this partnership the theatre hope to encourage children and young people to engage with their natural environment, green issues and sustainability, through the visual of performance.”
