Develop arts-based outdoor learning in your school with Out to Play

We are excited to launch our 2023-24 Out to Play Residencies Programme – available to book now for primary schools in the Greater Glasgow area! If your school is looking to advance pupil’s academic attainment in relation to Learning for Sustainability, increase the amount of time classes spend learning and playing outdoors, and develop teachers’ knowledge, confidence and skills in delivering arts-based outdoor learning – then we would love to work with you!

Our award-winning Out to Play programme has brought together primary schools and nurseries with professional Drama Artists to promote the role of Drama, Storytelling and Creativity in Outdoor Learning since 2015. To date, Out to Play has worked in-depth with 64 schools and nurseries, reaching over 7,000 children and 2,400 teachers and early years practitioners. Many of the schools we have collaborated with have booked second and third residencies for their pupils and staff, and headteachers have brought Out to Play with them from one setting to another.

What is an Out to Play residency?

A professional Drama Artist from Eco Drama collaborates with a partner primary school on 2 days each week for 5 weeks, delivering unique arts-based, outdoor learning sessions that engage and develop learners and teachers in the broad subject area of Learning for Sustainability. The project aims to nurture pupil’s confidence, creativity and health and wellbeing, as well as developing literacy and social skills and a deeper connection to the natural world. Out to Play has a strong teacher CPD element, with 2 twilight training sessions built in throughout the 5 weeks, plus the opportunity for staff to design and deliver their own arts-based outdoor learning sessions.

A short documentary with teacher testimonials as well as project reports can be found on our website.

Out to Play whole school CPD & resource packs

If a residency is not quite right for your school at this time, we are able to deliver Out to Play CPD sessions for whole school staff teams as well. Sessions are currently available in September and October 2023 – or please contact us to book a CPD workshop on a different date that better suits your timetable. We have 3 Out to Play Resource Packs available to purchase. These comprehensive packs include all the information a class teacher needs to get started with imaginative, creative outdoor learning.

We hope Out to Play might be of interest to your school. If you’d like to discuss a booking or find out more about the programme, please get in touch with Suzanne Prak-Sandilands (Schools Project Manager) via email on suzanne@ecodrama.co.uk or call 0141 552 9920.
